December 07th, 2016

Shame on Mungo.....

Dear Long Beach Residents,

This past Tuesday, Dec. 6th, our mayor and city council voted 6-3 to hold the FIS study session on December 13th.  At the same time they voted to move forward with the city to begin negotiations with Jet Blue on sizing, financing and other specific details to build the JB requested customs facility.

They also instructed the city staff to communicate with our Governor Brown, who must provide a letter of agreement to the CBP (Customs & Border Patrol) with his approval for the FIS facility to be located here in Long Beach.

Both of these issues were violations of the Brown Act since this item was not on the agenda and in fact, has been posted to be on the Dec. 13th council agenda.  Mungo and Garcia did manage to confuse the discussion enough to get their 6 votes, but we expect they will have to redo their vote next week.  A complaint has been filed with the DA’s office for their review.

This is a POLITICAL choice!  There is not a bureaucratic force, this includes the FAA, that can demand that any airport proprietor change from municipal to international.

The public, each and every one of us, can drive this decision to serve our best interests. How?  By bringing a thousand angry and concerned residents to the council chambers next Tuesday.

We hope you will not assume that your neighbors will take care of it!  If you DO NOT want this council to put us in a compromising position, placing our home values and quality of life in jeopardy then plan to attend the city council meeting on Dec. 13th.
If you are in need of transportation please call 562 423-1170 or email lbneighborhoodsfirst@gmail.com.

Thanks to Councilmembers Austin, Uranga and Supernaw for doing their best to redirect these disingenuous actions.  The remaining six members that did support taking these commitment actions prior to holding their “study session” next week should be held accountable.

Visit lbneighborhoodsfirst.com for the meeting details and share the word with your friends and family across our city.  What happens in one district will eventually impact the others!

Stay Involved!

Leave the airport the way it is. No international flights. It opens a completely unnecessary Pandora's Box and puts the noise ordinance in jeopardy by making it more attractive for other carriers to challenge JetBlue's stranglehold on flight slots. If that happens, we can wave goodbye to the lovely boutique airport we now have and that everyone loves and the historic neighborhoods that surround it.
And yeah, what was that mess last night?
Gotta love how Mungo was quick to take credit for it even though all she did was muck up a perfectly fine agenda item and subsequent substitute motion.
Thanks for catching the Brown Act Violation. Makes you wonder.

Thanks for your post Glennis! Please help to spread the word to all of our airport neighborhoods. Important for people to demonstrate their concerns.

I just finished talking to Councilwoman Mungo and here are some answers she provided me to simple questions I put to her that may interest you:
1) Was the letter to the governor to allow the city gather information approved on 12/6? Yes
2) Was the information to engage the tenants approved on 12/6? Yes
3) Why was item 23 removed from Today’s agenda ? Not ready to negotiate. We are in an information gathering mode.
4) Will the investigation into the Airport Commission affect the timing of their recommendation? According to the City attorney, No!
Here's a link to the press Telegram article on this: http://www.presstelegram.com/government-and-politics/20161212/investigation-underway-into-conflict-interest-claim-over-commissioners-ties-to-long-beach-airport
5) Beyond a letter from the Airport Director, outlining the specific reasons and risks of doing nothing as we have done for 21 years, will the city try to get any additional input in this area particularly anti-trust? No, not that she is aware of. The Director has worked for the FAA.

*Rae, if you submitted some type of letter to the DA, you may want to check to see if you completed the paperwork properly. Otherwise it may not be processed.

In today's meeting Jess Romo recommended that the letter to the governor be sent after everything was compete. Not before. And that will be what the City Council will do.

Thanks for all the info about what's going on at LGB. I agree that keeping the airport a boutique and keeping out other big carriers is a good thing for the neighborhood and the airport itself. Keep up the reporting!
