January 25th, 2017

Mission Accomplished ! ! ! !

Last night was a testimonial to what citizens can accomplish when they work together.  The final vote was 8-1 (Andrews opposed). But if you have participated or watched this journey for the past 3 1/2 years you know the numerous paths that had to be walked.  There were many!
Dozens of meetings, hundreds of emails and documents distributed.......too numerous to truly absorb.

Personally speaking, it will take awhile to comprehend what had to take place to bring our elected officials to the point of understanding and showing support for all Long Beach neighborhoods.  But the important piece is,
it happened!  Our concerns were respected, our fears of loss in this arena were consoled and the new connections are priceless.

We have met many new young, energetic, committed, passionate Long Beach residents who played a big part in educating our airport impacted neighborhoods.  Families who have returned or are newly settled into our wonderful "City of Neighborhoods" called Long Beach.  They will be the new leaders of tomorrow.  They will carry the torch, just as many decided years ago to protect and defend the quality of life for each and every one of us.

As for the city council, we want to personally thank Councilwoman Mungo for taking the lead on this final decision.  The Long Beach Airport does reside in her 5th district, but it is an asset, as well as a burden to many other areas.  Mungo and most others stepped into their new roles never expecting to have to face this type of
in-your-face politics.  They do want to do the best they can for their constituents. However, the lesson learned here for the other district representatives, who are not airport impacted was, we are One City.  Their first and foremost responsibility, after public safety, is to defend and enhance the communities quality of life.  To look well beyond their two terms and understand that the votes of today impact ALL Long Beach citizens of tomorrow.

It is important to recognize that our business communities must be supported to flourish, but never at the expense of the residents.  The taxpayers. The voters.  Unintended consequences should always be considered before making that final vote.

Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers that have participated over the past several years on this mission.  Whether by donations, walking and talking, attending meetings or most recently distributing 8000 fliers to the airport area neighborhoods.  Thousands of volunteer man hours to protect our homes!  Yes, it was worth it.

More updates on this and how we can use our momentum to continue to improve our communities.

Thank You,

Your HUSH2 Team

We did good. The one thing that still frustrates me is how over the top we had to be to have the city council listen. It should not have been this hard when such a high percentage of us were against it. At the meeting it was about 30% speakers for the terminal but most of them are Jet Blue employees. I wonder if they also got paid?

Yes, it takes so much to accomplish what should be easily understood, but ignored. This has been going on as long as I've lived here (32 yrs). Now let's work on enforcement of all those illegal late night flights. And an understanding of the harmful effects of pollution and stress caused by our airport.

Thank you for all your efforts in this fight. Still somewhat in disbelief. Hope this is the end of it...

Gary, we appreciate your staying connected. Unfortunately, it will never be the end of "it" since our airport is centered in our city surrounded by residential neighborhoods. Stay tuned.....

LBReport usually puts out information on LGB issues as soon as they occur. Check it out for the latest phone survey on FIS.

Thank you Deborah....it takes the entire community to work through these types of issues. Stay tuned.....

Unbelievable, but true! We are so happy, thrilled, giddy even! Eight of our city council stood with us. It was a long road to get them to see the light and the fact that all (but one) listened is a victory of huge proportions! For all the long time residents who have spent years fighting to keep our noise ordinance, we will some day pass this torch on to the new residents, this is a flame we must never let burn out. We must always remain vigilant, informed and engaged with our city council and connected to our neighbors. Rae, thanks for being the lightning rod that keeps us focused! :-)

First, thank you for being involved as well. As you will see on lbreport.com there is a group (undisclosed) who are doing a phone survey on a possible ballot measure for FIS. Stay tuned....

Thank You to everyone, a win for Democracy! Special thanks to Rae and longbeachneighborhoodsfirst for organizing us!
Agree that Mungo in particular was too hard to reach, we need more responsive councilmembers.

Hi David,

Thanks to you and your son for staying so connected. It took dozens of us to put this all into motion. Read today's lbreport.com about the latest FIS phone survey. It's not over !

Excellent work by all. Thank you committed residents for your dedication and staying the course when it seemed like the chips were stacked against us. I will be sure to thank the council. I still feel that some did it just to save their council seats not for our quality of life. But they put their big boy and girl pants on and did the right thing. For that I am grateful and relieved.

Hi Theresa,

Thanks for doing your part to make this happen. However, as we know it will never be "over" since the airport sits in the middle of residential neighborhoods. Visit lbreport.com for the most recent move.

Excellent job and thank you Stacy! My wife and I have lived in our home for 26 years and in district 5 for 30 years. We've raised our kids here and seen others do the same. We settled here because long beach has a small town feel and we want to keep it that way. We all benefit when each of us do our bit in maintaining and improving the look and feel of our great city and neighborhoods.

Hi Garry,

It's good to hear from 5th district residents on this issue. Stacy did a good thing for many LB neighborhoods! However, visit lbreport.com to see the latest effort being put out to the public. A possible ballot inititative! Stay tuned and stay involved!

Great job! Although I dislike the threat of recall, I think this was what finally convinced Stacy and Suzie to leave the dark side. I am so grateful for your not letting up.

Receive and File does not mean it's over forever! If we learn from history you may need those signs in 5 yrs. Keep ur sign at the ready. I feel the same as one of the previous comments. Why did it take all the upset & energy? We need to choose our elected officials wisely!

The Helaks
1/26/2017 12:06:25 pm

Agreed, this isn't over forever. We all need to stay on top of what is happening with our City Council, legistlations and the airport. We've just bought ourselves some time, until the next time. Hopefully, when that happens, we'll be organized and ready to take on the challenge again!

Rae Gabelich

Could not have said it better Mr. Sopo! Keep your signs and pay attention to ALL elected officials.

Thank you LBNF, Hush2, Rae, Joe, and everyone who took up the cause! I am so proud to be a native LB resident and to know we made a difference. As Joe mentioned above, it's not over but we now know we have the ability to fight back and be heard. God Bless America!

Good effort HUSH2 and constituents of District 4, 7 and 8!!!

Is there a way to set up a HUSH2 PAC (Political Action Committee) to generate donations in order to build a fund so if it ever happens again, we can commission a truly independent study, not one by a firm that has an interest in the outcome like Jacobs, which is an airport construction and design firm, who didn't recuse themselves from future work related to an FIS. Also the fund can go for campaign contributions to councilmembers who will oppose any future porpositions that will risk our Noise ordinance. $27 (Bernie size donations) for all 3000 + homes would add up to quite a bit.

Mike
1/26/2017 02:46:40 pm

Brilliant Suggestion. A HUSH2 protection/litigation fund would go a long way to prevent future expansion efforts!

My soul felt so happy all day after the decision. I'm grateful to Rae and Joe and everyone for all the hard work. We really did it. I'm grateful to the city council for almost all coming to our side. Thank you!

I am so glad that the Long Beach Council decided to oppose the expansion of the Airport. Thanks to good leadership Rae for taking this on the cause and the support of the community. Again Thanks so much.

Joe Sopo is right. We must be diligent and ready for the next time - because there will definitely be one.
This city council is addicted to OPM (other peoples' money) and will do whatever is necessary to enrich themselves. Being found out for taking Jet Blue and other airport-based funds made some council members realize they'd been discovered. It was only then that they did what residents and businesses wanted.
We need to properly vet council and mayoral candidates and force them to declare just where the money comes from, both light and dark funds.

Good work everyone! I"m so proud to be a part of this and to see that the people's voices were heard!

You should all be ashamed of yourselves for stopping the natural progression of this historically rich airport and community. For over 100 years the citizens of this city have celebrated the growth and success of the aeronautic industry from the birth of flight, through the cold war and now even to space exploration. The next logical step at Daugherty Field is International access. Most of your homes are the result of the aero industry and the Federal government investing billions of dollars in the area. With your attitudes and thinking, the 405 would still be a two lane road.

Wendy Nicolle
2/13/2017 02:26:41 pm

Interesting. I thought the result of my home was paying a mortgage. I am not ashamed of stopping veiled attempts at "progress" and you can count on me to continue to fight when when taking on unnecessary debt, increasing risk, and our home values and quality of life are compromised.

Rae Gabelich
2/17/2017 04:56:09 pm

Jerry, this was not a natural progression for LGB. It was the request of one carrier, who happens to be a month to month tenant (as they all are). The fact that the FIS would open additional doors to other carriers who may want a piece of the LB action was not in the best interest of long established, successful neighborhoods. Our city council did the right thing on this issue.

Thank you to all for your hard work. Much thanks to Rae for her continue diligence on these efforts. We much all continue to make our voices heard. Really glad to see Stacy Mungo step up. Remember we have to stay pro active.
