Contradictions in the FIS study......no surprise!

READ BOB JOY DOCUMENT HERE
Go to the Hot Topics page for the Bob Joy analysis of the Jacobs Feasibility Study for a Federal Inspection Service Facility at Long Beach Airport.  The $350K study was approved by the City Council to provide current data to guide the council  in their upcoming vote on installation of a FIS at Long Beach Airport (LGB).

As you can see from the analysis in the body of the report, the part that people might read, concludes that any increase in flights due to a FIS will always be too minimal to justify a challenge to our noise ordinance but a close examination of the text uncovers many contradictions to that conclusion.  In the appendices of the report, the part no one will read, we see that the authors actually state that their projection of low demand for international flights at LGB does not reflect the results of their own research and the incredible reason why.

The confusing presentation of data in this report has already deliberately misled the public and the media about the potential risk of a FIS to our ordinance.  The only chance of changing the direction of a City Council that has obviously already decided in favor on this issue is to educate the public about the details of how the FIS can open the door to a legal challenge to our Noise Ordinance.

The analysis linked below is meant as a reference document for you to use in any way tha you see fit.  Feel free to copy all of it or any part of it to help you make the case in other social media, to your friends or to City Council members that this FIS represents too great a risk to our ordinance to justify a yes vote on it's installation, regardless of it's supposed financial advantages.

Bob Joy - my hat is off to you for slogging through that document and uncovering the hidden risks to our community. I lived close to LAX from the 1950s to the 1970s and then worked within half mile of that airport for another 15 years. I saw what the expansion of LAX did to surrounding communities. This is a slippery slope and we are tetering at the top of that hill. I asked one question at the community meeting with Stacy Mungo: "What is the upside for Long Beach to approve an International Airport?" I never got an answer to that question. The most she could come up with was it would be a minor process improvement for the Gulf Stream business who do maintenance on planes coming from overseas. Also it may avoid a challenge by Jet Blue that would lead to a lawsuit. I have to question why our City Council members are so anxious to approve this change.

Lee,
Were you able to get at the analysis document from the LBNF website? It's not working for me on a Mac.

Thanks for reaching out Corliss! Your question was right on....the first and most important question must be WHY? To benefit the airport businesses.....Gulf Stream and all other on airport businesses have been doing just fine all these years. The neighborhoods have accepted the legal number of flights and feel mostly comfortable with the protection of the noise ordinance. The other commercial carriers are not interested in using international facilities at LGB. So again, the question is WHY? Without studying what could be serious consequences how can an educated decision be made. Stay tuned and hope you can make it on the 13th. Visit the site or our FB page for updates on the council decision this Tuesday 6th. Will they move this important decision into early 2017 or go under the holiday radar?
